This June, the Geary Gallery of Darien is proud to present the culturally rich, boldly inspiring exhibit, “Mystical Movement” by Mystic, CT artist, Sunil Howlader. His exhibit runs June 2-30 at the Geary Gallery, located at 576 Boston Post Road in Darien. All are welcome and admission is free.
About Sunil Howlader
Melding the beauty of naturalistic representation with the expressive elements of abstraction, Sunil Howlader creates his own rich style which is rich with spiritual undercurrents and cultural influences.
He employs a diverse assortment of media from oil and acrylic paints to mixed medium. Howlader’s light-filled color palette is characterized by sophisticated washes of translucent hues. Negating the presence of bold brushstrokes with these expanses of blended colors, Howlader deftly transitions between the realms of representation and abstraction within a single piece.
Howlader’s color choices carry weighty significance with many hues carrying symbolic meaning. Following the gradation of color across the surface, the eye moves from bright white, signifying the future, to the dark cool tones representing the past.
Art is not only about beauty. Art should make people think. It is about communicating to an audience. I can’t change the world, but maybe I can change one person at a time with my paintings. I draw from both my current Western cultural environment and my South Asian culture of origin. I believe my paintings, which combine elements from both cultures, will promote bridges and connections between all people.”
Howlader’s works have been widely exhibited throughout Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. His award-winning artistry is unmatched in his native Bangladesh. He has won many international awards including the Winter Olympic Painting Exhibition Award in Japan and the UNICEF Netherlands Award as well as many awards in the U.S.
Howlader holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Dhaka and was an International Artist-in-Residence at the Griffis Art Center in New London CT. His paintings are included in the collections of UNICEF Netherlands, Griffis Art Center and the National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts in Bangladesh.
