Sunil Howlader

Blending the beauty of naturalistic representation with the expressive power of abstraction, Sunil Howlader has developed a richly individual style imbued with spiritual resonance and cultural depth. Working across diverse media — ranging from oil and acrylic to mixed techniques — he explores the harmony between light, texture, and emotion.

Howlader’s luminous color palette is defined by sophisticated layers of translucent hues. By softening the presence of bold brushstrokes with seamless washes of color, he fluidly bridges the realms of representation and abstraction within a single composition. Each hue carries symbolic meaning: the gentle transition from bright white, representing the future, to deep, cool tones, reflecting the past, invites viewers into a meditative visual journey through time and emotion.

Howlader earned an MFA from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1991, and in 2000, he served as the International Artist-in-Residence at the Griffis Art Center in New London, CT.

His work has been widely exhibited across Asia, Europe, the United States, and Australia. Howlader has received numerous international honors, including the Winter Olympic Painting Exhibition Award (Japan) and the UNICEF Netherlands Award, as well as many awards in the United States including several museum awards.
